After JDRHS I moved to DC to attend Georgetown, and began working full-time for the federal government almost immediately. Thirty-seven years later, after a pretty decent career working for a number of federal agencies including a bunch of Cabinet Secretaries, I finally retired in 2012 as Director of Operations for the headquarters of the US Food and Drug Administration, having completed the consolidation 10,000 employees from over 40 FDA locations onto a new $1.5B 660-acre Campus in Silver Spring, MD. The next day, I reported to Washington Adventist Hospital as Executive Director, and six years later I'm still there, having somehow been promoted to Vice President. WAH is the top heart hospital in MD and we have some of the top heart surgeons in the world. We also collaborate extensively with the FDA, and as such are unique among hospitals. For two years now we've been building a brand-new, state of the art hospital next to the FDA, and I'm heavily involved in running the current hospital and planning the transition to the new one which will take place in August 2019. I'll be glad when the move is over. Moving a hospital is no small feat.
I'm happily married to the former Teresa Turyn, an ERISA lawyer who serves as a Division Director at the US Department of Labor.
We have 3 dogs who are a lot like kids except they don't need clothing and they don't require money for college and grad school.
We have a beach house in Delaware where we spend nearly every weekend, year round.
I'm horrified every time I read a new addition to the "In Memory" section. We've lost a lot of good people way too soon. Anyone reading this should realize how lucky we are to still be healthy at the age of 60-61 of whatever we all are, and appreciate it.
